SMF Friends and SMF Revisited
Almost three months after the “SMF incident” how are things today? Depends on who you ask I guess and if anyone cares anyway. Well, there is some mixed news but nothing major…at least yet.
Now that we’re closing in on three months, a lot of dust has settled and there are a few changes but perhaps the biggest news of any of it is that SMF has released their third release candidate for SMF 2.0. The RC has several security fixes in it and a whole lot of usability fixes in the form of presentation.
Initial feedback is pretty good and a lot of people are saying good things about the upgrade which is great news for the SMF team. Would be great to see a 2.0 final before the summer which is probably likely.
As for the SMF team, they are apparently working very happily and discussing things such as license changes, organization options, and generally doing quite well. It’s good news for the community as things have really stabilized.
So what of the other group involved in the original incident? The SMF Friends, or at least the majority, have opted to create a new piece of software. Not really a competitor to SMF but more so an all encompassing application. It should be a very interesting project with some of the original developers from SMF and is pretty exciting so far.
The SMF Friends site has become pretty much non used as of late since the project split off to the Yourasoft website. It’s still used by some of the friends and users and there are still some legal issues with SMF that are being dealt with by some people there (I’m not taking part in the legal issues so can’t comment on them).
With the move to the new project and the same trolls being trolls, I figured my time was done at that site so have removed my account from there. I realized something though by listening to some of the garbage there and I now fully understand how some of the SMF team can feel. Some people really do feel the need to troll like crazy and it’s sad. Sad because people are working hard for something they believe in but every time you turn a corner the same people are provoking, instigating, and generally being douches. Way to push people on your side away guys…
Overall though, things are looking good for both groups for the most part. SMF lost some big forums in the process but hopefully they can pull together and get final 2.0 out soon and get back on track. At the same time, development should be starting this week on Project Phoenix as well which is, again, very exciting.
